Mosquito bites

#1 Postby ranter » July 29th, 2007, 7:17 pm

I'm interested to hear if any of you are bothered with mosquito bites when you holiday abroad. Or midge bites if you holiday here, in Scotland.
I must have either very bad or very sweet blood, as they attack me with a vengeance! Every time too. I don't, however, have the nasty reaction that some people experience, but it is a bit of a nuisance just the same.
Can anyone add to this list of repellents or give me some advice.
I have used the following, with varying degrees of success!
Jungle Formula, Autan, Antiomos, Garlic, Mosiguard, Jaica Milk, Avon Skin so Soft, Vitamin B1, Repellents with Deet- Repellents without Deet. Natural methods too-Citonella, Patchuli, Eucalyptus.
Not all at the same time though!!
I suppose we would be millionaires if we came up with a cure for this, but I'm interested in your views just the same.
I suppose staying at home would be sound`advice, but hey- no fun in that.
Suggestions on a post card please. I will be suitably impressed if there's something I've missed during all those years.

Ranter

As a big fat bloke I tend to exhale larger than normal quantities of CO2 which is what the little f*ckers home in on. In the days I smoked a pipe, generating large clouds of smoke seemed to keep them at bay.

I've not come across or used anything you don't list but I found Skin so Soft works reasonably well and also doesn't irritate my skin.

I have been tempted to invest in one of those machines that entices them in then incinerates them.
Regards

Campbell, I'll take your advise and try this. I'll let you know if it works. :hilarity:

They don't seem to like me though I've never been to the North of Scotland, admittedly. But whenever we're out in the garden my mum always comes in covered in lumps whereas I don't have any. Maybe my blood tastes nasty.

I definitely attract mosquitoes if I'm unprotected but I just buy any old mosquito repellant from a chemist and it works fine for me. Are you off abroad soon, ranter?

BBC Breakfast this morning - some contributions on this subject because the hotter? wetter weather is causing an increase in mozzies. Vit B which i thin is found in Marmite and i guess Vegemite which i prefer now. AFAIK you do not rub it on but eat it on your toast and it makes you and your blood smell a bit.
Also they do not bite at breakfast time - only for supper.

When we used to holiday in Scotland the midges didn't bother me, but Mary used to get eaten alive, and has scars to prove it.

The Shetland midge however is a different beast (smaller than the Scottish one) When they're out I can't get anything done outside.

No midges out today, the weather is shite.

I think I can call myself an "expert" on the subject of mosquitos and biting flies. "Deep Woods OFF" which contains more DEET than the regular OFF always does the trick. No matter how bad they are... they don't bite.
I know Deet isn't good for you...but we have West Nile Virus here, so I'm not taking any chances. I've used Skin So Soft with mixed results.

Thanks very much for this info. I knew there would be something out there which I hadn't heard of.
I'll order this later and report back in due course. I am really curious to know if it will work. If so, it will be the first product ever! (holiday not until 24th Aug).
Thanks .

Because it is liquid and possibly flamable?

Here in the states, they ask you...and I always tell the truth. They ship it via ground, instead of air, if that is the case.
But, I have never tried to ship something like that over-seas. I could ask my local post office if it would be an issue for an individual to ship it. I'm not sure how long it would take to get to you, tho.
What country do you live in, ranter?

I just checked into it and they( The US Postal Service ) will not allow me to send Deep Woods Off...or anything flamable / alcohol based to Scotland or anywhere overseas!

It strikes me as strange, that if a US company has a good product, that does what it says on the tin so to speak, that it's not available in the UK, maybe they don't know about the Scottish midge, maybe there's a good franchise opportunity going begging?

Well, in spite of Goldie's endeavours, Deep Woods Off won't be in my suitcase this year. I was looking forward to the experiment too! Thanks for trying- it is very much appreciated.
Looks like it will be the same old potions as before.

I was kinda thinking the same thing.
It MAY be that Deep Woods Off has too much DEET and is over regulation in your country. Do you guys have any OFF products?

Maybe that is why your DEET products don't work...they are not strong enough.
Just guessing here...
Alan...you can trease me about my little sayings all you like. I am not easily offened. I only said "Dag Nabbit"...because it appears that you folks don't cus on this site. I normally would have said "Goddammit!"
But I DO say DANG! a lot! :)
