"Make your hair stand on end" is the best I can do for #3 given that the unknown word has similarities to trichology.

Yep. I reckon this was a translation directly from Modern Greek. The word order suggests it. I wonder why it left the word for 'hair' untranslated.

It does not require a second language for meaning to be obscure. Just ask Precott. In an otherwise decidedly unfunny news-item about a man who is in hospital after a failed suicide bombing attempt, I thought it was ironic that he was described as "a recent convert to Islam, who had then been radicalised and prayed upon."

Unless of course, I got the spelling wrong...
